Starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, et al. Released to DVD on May 4, 1999.
Starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, again, You've Got Mail is the tale of two New Yorkers, Joe Fox III (Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Ryan), who meet via chat room on the Internet. But, and here's the catch, both people have met each other in the real world as well as in the cyber world. Hanks works his Tom Hanks like romantic charm throughout the film, and Ryan plays a variation on her perky, cute, and nice girl character creating a warm, pleasant, if somewhat familial atmosphere. With Sleepless in Seattle, writer/director Nora Ephron proved that she was a gifted story teller with other people's material, and in You've Got Mail (previously known as The Shop Around the Corner) things are no different. There are numerous and sizeable gaps you can poke in the plotline and structure of You've Got Mail, but, thanks to the angelic nature of Hanks and Ryan's courtship, I didn't want to. As a fat-free, light, unrealistic romantic comedy, You've Got Mail positively shines.
