Starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, et al. Released to DVD on October 3, 2000.
Having previously seen Das Boot, The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide, the concept of a mediocre submarine movie was completely foreign to me. Then I saw U-571 and suddenly that changed. Starring Matthew McConnaughey, the material in U-571 was poor by any stretch of the imagination, it's just that every conceivable plot twist or sequence had been done before, and done with more tension, drama or edge-of-your-seat suspense. McConnaughey plays Lt. Andrew Tyler, a Navy officer who aspires to command his own submarine. His hopes are dashed when his own commanding officer, Mike Dahlgren (Bill Paxton) gives him a poor review. Things become that much more complicated when Tyler and Dahlgren are ordered to go to sea to capture a sitting duck German submarine. This movie was interesting, by pales in comparison to the other films in its genre.
