When a director is seen as being underrated or unheralded, it generally means that he has made several critically acclaimed films that haven't grossed more than $10 million at the box office. Based on this assumption, director John Dahl (Red Rock West, The Last Seduction) is the most underrated director of all time. Following his critical success on The Last Seduction, Dahl turned his attention onto the underground world of card players. Matt Damon stars in Rounders as Mike McDermott, a law school student who has 'retired' from the card circuit at the request of his girlfriend, fellow law student, Jo (Gretchen Mol). However, Mike's definition of retirement takes on a new meaning when his best friend Worm (Edward Norton) is released from prison and in need of some serious cash and fast. One of the first films to investigate white collar gambling in such an honest and frank manner, Rounders is benefited immensely by stunning performances by Damon, Norton and a hirsute John Malkovich. This film's meager box office take can't subtract anything from this wonderfully unheralded movie.
