During the late '90's, Japanese anime has been becoming more popular in the United States. Perfect Blue, though, is one film that bridges the gap from hard-core anime to the more mainstream American, animated movies. When Mima Kirigoe (Junko Iwao) decides to take a leave of absence from her extremely popular rock group, CHAM-think of a female version of the Backstreet Boys with talent-to pursue a career in acting, her life takes several unexpected turns for the worse. Mima starts receiving death threats, people around her begin being murdered and, most disturbingly, someone has created a web-site that tells of the most intimate and mundane details of her life on a daily basis. Balancing this with her guilty conscience about leaving CHAM leaves Mima in a very strange place. Crisp, original and thoroughly innovative, Perfect Blue was a wondrous trip.
