Saved from hanging in an Egyptian prison by Evelyn Carnavon (Rachel Weisz), Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) agrees to lead her and her brother, Jonathon (John Hannah) to the lost city of Hamunaptra, city of the dead, where Evelyn hopes to find the book of Amun-Ra, an ancient text made out of gold. However, what the group actually ends up with is the book of the dead. After reading a few passages she shouldn't have, a mummy is unleashed and it's up to O'Connell and friends to send the mummy back from whence he came. Fraser performs admirably in the title role, giving O'Connell an energy that none of the characters in Star Wars Episode Oneóor previous mummy films really graspedóand the decision to cast notable B-star Arnold Vosloo as the human shape of the mummy wondrous. This was an action/adventure flick filled with tongue-in-cheek humor, beautifully choreographed action sequences and fun.
