Starring Jeremy Irons, Dominique Swain, Melanie Griffith. Released to DVD on October 12, 1999.
The controversy surrounding Adrian Lyne's 1997 remake of the 1962 film, Lolita, will bring scores of new viewers to novelist Vladimir Nabakov's tale of forbidden love; a fortunate thing for those who wouldn't have normally been attracted to this phenomenally complex tale of one man's crippling dehabilitation. Jeremy Irons stars as Humbert Humbert, a college professor who falls madly and obsessively in love with the 14 year old daughter, Lolita (Dominique Swain) of his landlord (Melanie Griffith). Anything featuring Griffith that, ultimately, turns out to be enjoyable is, in itself, something to write about, but overlooked in the boycotting and banning of this film is Lyne's finest directorial effort to date. Irons and Swain delivered astonishing performances, with Swain perfectly capturing the essence of Lolita's coquettishness, This was an excellent drama denied to the public for two years, courtesy of the MPAA.
