Starring Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon. Released to DVD on October 19, 1999.
Set and shot in co-writer/director Alexander Payne's hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, Election is about as anti-Hollywood and anti-establishment as one can find among today's theatrical releases. Reese Witherspoon stars as Tracy Flick, the amalgamation of every bookworm, nerdy, valedictorian, kiss-ass you knew in high school; the girl you loved to hate. And hate her teacher Jim McCallister (Matthew Broderick) does. When McCallister learns that Tracy will be running unopposed for the office of class president, he steps up to gently coax the school's injured, star quarterback, Paul Mitchell (Chris Klein) into running against Tracy, setting up confrontations and abuses of power that even Bill Clinton would be hard pressed to top. Fortunately, Payne took the cutting edge spirit and off-the-wall sensibility that had initially intrigued me in his previous film, Citizen Ruth, and applied it to a much more comedic script here in Election.
