Starring Glenn Close, Charles S. Dutton. Released to DVD on September 14, 1999.

Set in the small burg of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Cookie's Fortune follows the events and reactions surrounding the death of the beloved matriarch, "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal). Widowed and desperately missing her husband, Cookie commits suicide in order to meet her betrothed in heaven. Her body is discovered by her daughters, Camille (Glenn Close) and Cora (Julianne Moore). In order to preserve the dignity of the family name, Camille covers up Cookie's suicide, making it look like murder, a far more dignified way to die than suicide. And thus begins the rather laid-back investigation of Cookie's "murder". One facet of filmmaking that is synonymous with Altman's projects is the wide breadth of on-screen talent he secures. With the presences of veteran screen actors Close, Neal, Moore, Charles Dutton, Liv Tyler, Chris O'Donnell, Altman favorite Lyle Lovett, among others, Cookie's Fortune is ripe with well-rounded performances and a charm that isn't often found in today's films.
