CHRIS NEUMER'S BIO
Stumped? Magazine publisher • e-mail Chris

Chris Neumer is the publisher and lead writer of the film magazine, Stumped?. He founded the magazine in 1997. Bridging the gap between the mainstream movie publications, Premiere, and the scholarly, FilmComment, Stumped? has carved out a niche for itself as both literate and entertaining.

Neumer graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan with a degree in anthropology, a line of study that he cites as significantly impacting his current method of interviewing and his ability to watch Indiana Jones movies. He is an avid fan of the American independent film scene and cannot understand why audiences still turn out in droves to see cinematic adapatations of video games.

Neumer has interviewed over 300 industry insiders during his tenure at Stumped?. He counts director Robert Altman, actors Thomas Jane and Josh Lucas among his best interview subjects and used to argue ardently that no one could possibly be as difficult and testy an interview subject as director Melvin van Peebles until he chatted with Alfred Hitchcock's daughter, Pat. It's hard to answer a question that begins with "How do you feel about..." with a yes or a no answer, but Pat Hitchcock found a way.

Neumer played college basketball, runs a five minute mile, proactively tries to avoid viewing films by Goddard or Fellini or any filmmaker deemed 'new wave' and is positively unable to fathom a situation where he'd wear sweatpants to a business function.

People often ask Neumer what his favorite film is. He recently realized that he wasn't entirely comfortable with one single movie shaping another person's vision of his cinematic taste. He now cites some combination of the below films in response to the question, "What is your favorite film?" Neumer also understands that he may need some kind of intensive therapy to explain his preferences... he's looked, but can't find any other writers who have more Melissa Joan Hart movies in their 'personal favorites' list than Martin Scorsese pictures. In no particular order, some of his favorite films are:

The Last of the Mohicans
Pleasantville
Cast Away
Shrek 2
North by Northwest
Kissing Jessica Stein
Brick
Irreversible
Star Wars
Drive Me Crazy
Rear Window
The Fellowship of the Ring
Leaving Las Vegas
