The phrase 'off-beat', like the word quirky, is used so often that when you come across something that is truly off-beat, the meaning of the word has been lost describing Demi Moore's latest career move. Such is the case with Where's Marlowe? If you didn't know better, you'd argue that Where's Marlowe? was a low-budget documentary about a failing private investigation firm. However, the truth of the matter is that Where's Marlowe? is an intensely clever mock-documentary--the material is completely fictional--about one caper in the life of Joe Boone, P.I. (Miguel Ferrer) that is being taped by film students A.J. Edison (John Livingston) and Wilt Crawley (Dante Beze). Written by Daniel Pyne and John Mankiewicz and directed by Pyne, Where's Marlowe? is very similar in genre to The Blair Witch Project, only, Where's Marlowe? is entertaining, crisp, well-acted and a genuine pleasure to watch.
