Starring Vince Vaughn. Released to DVD on June 8, 1999.

Ideally, what director Gus Van Sant wanted to do in this remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 masterpiece, Psycho, was noble. Van Sant wanted to modernize Hitchcock's film to bring the delight and joy that he, Van Sant, had received when watching the original to a whole new audience of people who wouldn't consider watching a black/white movie even after Hell froze over. However, what Van Sant managed to create in his nearly exact remake of Psycho was what Dr. Frankenstein created in his monster: an entity composed of exactly the same parts as the original entity, but without the heart or soul. This was most notable in the decision to cast Vince Vaughn in the lead role of Norman Bates. Vaughn is, and has made a name for himself by being a pretty boy; Vaughn is no more a head case nutjob than golf is a sport. A quiet innkeeper, Bates (Vaughn) lives at home with his mother and is quite surprised to learn that several of his inn's guests have had an untimely meeting with a knife. Bottom line? See the original.
